It’s been a while since I’ve written a monthly report, and to be honest, I’ve not written one since February 2020, before the world went into lockdown for COVID. Most agencies excelled during this time, but as an introvert, I failed to build in 2020 and didn’t meet my goals for that year.

In 2021, my city experienced looting and people locked down their neighbourhoods, and in 2022, we had floods, which were so bad that in certain parts of Durban, you could see shipping containers floating in the middle of highways.

The early 2020s were not a great time to be building a business in Durban, so in 2022, I took a job as a web developer and stayed at the job until June 2024, while I was still doing work on the side for current clients, friends and family.

Fast forward to today

I’ve been back in business for 15 months, and business has been growing since I last wrote. Back in 2020, Fosker Media could barely pay me, and now Fosker Media is a R300K+ year agency, offering web design, social media, design & branding, advertising, SEO, and planning to introduce AI chatbots and automations next year.

Which means I make more than I did working a full-time job, and I don’t work as much as when I worked at Jimbu.

October was a momentous month for Fosker Media as we hired our first employee. She’s new to the working world, so I’m training her to do all the things that I currently do, in the hopes of freeing up my time to work on the business, and not in the business.

This month has not been smooth sailing, due to a few clients who still owe a decent amount of money for the last few months, and some time-wasters this month. This has caused some financial strains, but as always, I just keep pushing forward.

What’s next

As we head into the last 2 months of the year, we are still short of reaching our yearly goal of R346,302, which would be 100% YOY(year on Year) growth. We are currently at 75% YOY growth, so we need to push to reach this goal.

I would like another 2-4 social media accounts, as they will help to create a more stable foundation for the business next year and support bringing on a full-time content creator.

We will most likely see another 2-4 websites come in over the next 2 months. We should end the year with 24 websites built, excluding internal brands.

Now that it’s not just me building the business, I want to start building our social media, marketing, and sales to be in a position to grow more in 2026.

What I learned

  1. Teaching takes time: Teaching a new employee can be time-consuming, but teaching a smaller task allows for wins early in the process.
  2. Cash flow vigilance: In business, you will have clients who don’t pay or waste your time; you need to know your cash position and build a safety net for emergencies.

Overall, I’m happy that I’m back to running my business and finally see growth that I’ve waited over 15 years to achieve. I might not have the biggest digital agency yet, but I will keep pushing until we’ve become a leader in our space.
